The Short Answer
Windows 10 Still Starts—But Routine Security Support Has Ended
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 Home and Pro on 14 October 2025. A computer does not stop working on that date, but the operating system no longer receives normal security fixes. Check Windows 11 compatibility and application needs first. Use Extended Security Updates only as a paid, time-limited bridge where eligible; replace or repurpose hardware when a supported upgrade is unsafe or uneconomical.
What Matters Most
- Confirm the exact Windows edition, version and hardware compatibility.
- Back up data and record applications before any upgrade or migration.
- Treat ESU as transition time, not a permanent lifecycle plan.
- Do not bypass Windows 11 requirements on a critical business device without understanding support and security consequences.
01
Check Whether The Existing Computer Can Move Forward
Use Microsoft’s compatibility information and inspect processor, TPM, Secure Boot, memory, storage and firmware. Also confirm that printers, specialist software, VPNs and line-of-business systems support Windows 11.
A technically eligible device may still need storage, memory, firmware or cleanup work to provide a good result. An ineligible device may remain useful in a constrained, non-sensitive role, but not as an unexamined daily business endpoint.
- Current verified backup and recovery details.
- Windows activation and Microsoft or local account ownership.
- Application installers, licences and compatibility.
- BitLocker recovery key where encryption is enabled.
- Peripheral and network dependencies.

02
Understand The Three Main Routes
A supported Windows 11 upgrade preserves the device when compatibility and performance are sound. ESU can buy limited security-update time for eligible Windows 10 systems while a replacement or application migration is prepared. Replacement is preferable when the machine cannot meet requirements, is already unreliable or would absorb disproportionate upgrade labour.
The cheapest sticker price is not always the cheapest business route. Include migration, setup, docks, application changes and downtime.
| Route | Best Fit | Important Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade To Windows 11 | Compatible, reliable hardware | Test applications and peripherals |
| Extended Security Updates | Short transition for eligible systems | Paid and time-limited; not full lifecycle renewal |
| Replace | Unsupported or unreliable device | Budget setup, migration and secure disposal |
03
Migrate Without Losing The Business Day
Inventory data, browsers, email, Microsoft 365, printers, shared folders and specialist applications. Build and patch the target, test it with the user, verify files and only then retire the old device.
Ultra IT can inspect a Windows 10 computer, explain the viable routes and perform an upgrade or replacement migration across the Sunshine Coast and Gympie or assist with eligible software work remotely.
Common Questions
Clear Answers Before You Decide
Can I Keep Using Windows 10?
The system can continue to run, but ordinary security support has ended for mainstream Windows 10 Home and Pro. Assess exposure, eligibility for ESU and a supported migration path.
Should I Install Windows 11 On Unsupported Hardware?
Microsoft does not recommend it and support or updates are not assured. Critical devices should use a supported platform unless a carefully managed exception is justified.
Does ESU Add New Windows Features?
No. Extended Security Updates are primarily a temporary security-update bridge, not a feature or general support extension.
